Abstract
Fluid therapy is the most important in treating infantile dehydration which occur through acute diarrhea.
Expenditure of water and electrolytes in infants is considerably greater per unit of body weight than in adults. Therefore, dehydrated infants who losean excessive amount of water and electrolytes through acute diarrhea must be treated promptly.
Since complete evaluation of the status of the dehydrated infant is a prerequisite to effective fluid therapy, an accurate history, physical examination and laboratory studies must be obtained.
Practical fluid therapy for moderate and severe infantile dehydration are herein reviewed.
Fluid therapy during the acute phase is aimed at replacing the loss of fluids and electrolytes due to acute diarrhea and suppling the daily requirements.
